What it is
An implant is a small titanium device that mimics the natural root of a tooth. It's secured into the jaw, and a crown or bridge is attached to it.
Unlike a bridge, an implant doesn't involve the neighbouring teeth, and it can match the function and appearance of a natural tooth.
Implants can also help secure a loose full denture.
Our principal dentist, James Craig, has a special interest in dental implants and advanced restorative treatment.
Who it's for
Adults missing one or more teeth who want a fixed replacement.
Not everyone is suitable. Your dentist will check your general health, your gums and the bone in your jaw first, and explain your options honestly, including bridges and dentures.
What to expect
- A consultation and examination, with x-rays or scans as needed, and a written treatment plan and estimate.
- The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, then given time to heal into the bone before the final crown, bridge or denture is fitted.
- Your dentist will explain the timescale for your own treatment, and how to look after your implant afterwards.
