Restoring teeth

Dental crowns, inlays and onlays

Laboratory-made restorations that strengthen a weakened tooth and protect it for the long term.

What it is

Crowns, inlays and onlays are made in a dental laboratory to fit your tooth exactly.

They're fixed in place to improve the strength and durability of a tooth, and can be made of metal, ceramic or a combination of both.

An inlay or onlay restores part of a tooth; a crown covers the whole visible part.

Who it's for

Teeth that are heavily filled, cracked, worn or weakened, or that have had root canal treatment, where a filling alone isn't strong enough.

What to expect

  1. At the first visit, your dentist prepares the tooth and takes impressions or scans. You'll usually have a temporary restoration to wear in the meantime.
  2. At the second visit, the finished crown, inlay or onlay is checked for fit and colour, then fixed in place.
