What it is
Your dentist looks at your teeth, gums and the soft tissues of your mouth to spot decay, gum disease and other problems early.
Every examination includes an oral cancer screening. Signs of some general medical conditions can also show up in the mouth.
X-rays are taken only if your dentist needs them to check something they can't see.
Who it's for
Everyone, from young children to older adults. We encourage parents to bring children to the dentist from birth.
How often you need a check-up depends on your own oral health. Your dentist will recommend the right interval for you.
What to expect
- We'll ask about your medical and social history and any changes since your last visit. Your oral health and general health are closely linked, so this is updated at every examination. It also helps us look after you safely in a medical emergency, and it's a legal requirement.
- Your dentist examines your mouth and explains what they find in plain words.
- If you need any treatment, we'll talk you through the options and costs before anything is booked. Private patients get a written estimate.
